If you’re in the area....The Alphabet Museum opens tomorrow at the Lettering Arts Centre in Snape, Suffolk and runs until 9 September.

The exhibition will present a collection of work, much of it newly commissioned, that reaches back to the ancient beginnings of the alphabet and illustrates the connections between symbols and sounds, the roundabout routes from hieroglyphs to the letters we use today and the myriad ways in which skilled letter carvers work with and manipulate the ‘other’ tools of their trade – the letters of the alphabet. The exhibition includes carvings, drawings, glass and wood work, systems of codes, Greek, Roman and Hebrew alphabets and axe work. ...

Wow!!3-km-long calligraphy breaks records

A calligraphy artist in North China, who says he never took a day off for eight years, has finally completed a 3-kilometer-long series of scrolls that have been declared the country's longest.

The calligraphy work by Yang Chunguang, who lives in the city of Xingtai, Hebei Province, was made in 108 rolls, each of which is 30 meters long, for a total length of more than 3,000 meters.

Once again we were blessed with fine weather for the Oxford Scribes annual summer Club Day. This year we are celebrating 35 years since the founding of OS and had a wonderful display of memorabilia going right back to those early days on show. And a slide show of pieces of work from the first ever Oxford Scribes exhibition.
We were also delighted to have Tim Noad, a fellow member of OS, with us to talk to us about a year of commissions - it was fascinating! Thank you, Tim Noad! And last but not least, we enjoyed an al fresco bring and share lunch! ...

Timeline PhotosToday at Farringdon we unveiled a memorial to Edward Johnston, creator of the typeface used across our network.

Designed by Fraser Muggeridge, the artwork extends along an entire wall in the station, and is inspired by the type pieces used in a printing press. ...
