“Twelfth Night” – A contemporary lettering exhibition

We hope that members will be able to join us for our Summer Party / Club Day starting at 10.30 am with the Theme:
“Written in Shakespeare’s Time”
Speakers will be:
Mike Webb, Curator of Early Modern Archives and Manuscripts at the Bodleian Library. Mike will base his talk around domestic letters and documents written by both men and women during Shakespeare’s time.
Dr. Julia Craig-McFeely, Research Fellow at Oxford University Music Faculty. Julia will talk about some hand-written sets of music books used by singers in Shakespeare’s time.
There’ll be a bring and share lunch, which we hope will take place outside in the sunshine.
“Twelfth Night” is an exhibition of new work by members of Oxford Scribes. It will take place at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford from 10 December 2016 – 21 January 2017 and forms part of Oxford’s tribute to Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of his death.
It isn’t all business at the Oxford Scribes AGM this Saturday!
All the wonderful work, which has now been assessed, from the CLAS Certificate of Skills course run recently at Oxford Scribes will be on display. Members of the course will be on hand to talk about the skills they have learnt and share tips with you.
We will also be showing all the work from the CLAS Art and the Letter Exhibitions from this year and last year.
Take the chance to meet up with other members and talk about lettering.
Be there 10 am – 1 pm bring your own lunch
How about trying a “taster” calligraphy course. Five separate sessions to introduce the letter arts.
Try out a steel nib and learn to write in colour with gouache. Make and write with your own calligraphic tools.
Design a modern illuminated capital and try a ‘pressure/release’ alphabet with a pencil as well as learn one formal hand.
We will supply all the equipment and tools you need and materials will be available at a small additional cost or of course you can bring your own.
Course starts 19 April 2016 then every Tuesday until 17 May only £60 for five sessions at the North Oxford Association Community Centre, Summertown, Oxford.

There is no workshop in March this year – instead join calligraphic friends at the British Library for the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society AGM and Art and the Letter Exhibition on Saturday 12 March 2016.
This year’s keynote speaker is Susie Leiper who will talk about her work.
Loredana Zega will be demonstrating and new fellows Linda Lewis, Rosella Garavaglia and Michela Antonello with be showing their work.
Plans are well under way for our next social event which will also include our AGM.
This will be held on 9 April 2016 at Stanton St John Village Hall. The Spring edition of our newsletter will be ready for collection.
Members are reminded that they will be able to collect their copy of the latest Oxford Scribes Newsletter at the private view of the Collections Exhbition at the North Wall Oxford on Saturday 12th December.
