Some members of Oxford Scribes undertake commissions. Those who do are listed below.
Take a look on this website at the gallery of artists’ work and also at each calligrapher’s own website or Facebook page to help you decide which calligrapher/s you would like to contact.
Think about your requirements:
Before contacting them, you will need to have an idea of your requirements:
- Are you commissioning a poem, wedding stationery, family tree, memorial work or looking to work with the calligrapher to create something new? There are many possibilities in terms of colours, backgrounds, lettering style, size and decoration. The calligrapher will be able to discuss and advise on these.
- Deadlines/ timing – if you have a definite deadline let the calligrapher know at the start of the process. Please leave as much lead-in time as possible.
- Budget – having some idea of your budget will help the calligrapher to suggest options. Each calligrapher will have a price scale for such things as place cards, invitations and envelopes, which will depend on content, timescale, quantity etc.
Liasing with your calligrapher:
Once you have chosen a calligrapher, call or email them to discuss your requirements. If they agree that they are happy to undertake the commission you can request a written quotation, which will detail exactly what is included in the price. Please note that last minute changes, late additions or deletions may incur additional costs. Any possible copyright issues will be advised by the calligrapher.
If you are unsure of which calligrapher may be best suited to the work you are commissioning, contact us at email@example.com for guidance.
It is helpful to give as much information as possible to the calligrapher but be open to ideas from them – they have the experience. You can ask for an initial sketch and once agreed you can then leave the calligrapher to proceed.
The calligrapher will discuss timings, deposits, framing, delivery and payment methods with you. Note that Oxford Scribes does not take responsibility for contracts between calligraphers and clients.
