David Jones' work is enjoying a Renaissance among Lettering Artists in the UK. He draws his letters using a number of historical sources and they have a naive quality as they are hand drawn. SYNOPSIS: On this workshop we will look at the classic Blackletter script - Gothic Textura. Not quite as simple as it looks but very achievable. It is a classic accompaniment to copperplate if used in small quantities. There were no capital letters designed for this script (roman caps. or uncials were commonly used) but we can design an appropriate alphabet to suit the individual. Marion has a fascinating book on gothic typefaces, which she will bring. Islamic Illuminations with Tim Noad

Islamic illumination is little known in the UK but a vast resource for inspiration and ideas. Participants will create an illuminated design based on ‘square Kufic’ script but using western letterforms. The project will also introduce simple painting and gilding techniques. Tim will give a short illustrated talk about Islamic illumination and how it has inspired his own work.

SYNOPSIS: This workshop explores the tools and techniques of drawn and painted letters using a pointed sable brush. Learn how to create letters or use existing forms, and paint these on to paper.
