Workshop: The Wonders of Versals & Compound Letterforms with Gemma Black

Gemma is a renowned artist and calligrapher, based in Tasmania. She is a Fellow of CLAS and has been a tutor at three CLAS Festivals. She has taught in many countries and examples of her work can be found in numerous public and private collections all over the world.
This two-day workshop will comprise the exploration of versal forms from every genre. We will touch on the basic versal and the versal history and will cover chronological examples from the 9th century Grandval Bible through to Irene Wellington and beyond. The workshop will give a sound structural knowledge of versal forms and show what wonderful outcomes can be achieved.
You will need to bring with you:
- Your usual calligraphic equipment including a set of square edged nibs – small sizes are required being three-quarter, one and one and a half mm;
- Practice pad (layout) paper A3 size; 2 fine art sheets in neutral colours (tan, cream, ivory, white etc.); 1 fine art sheet in black or charcoal colour;
- Tracing paper;
- Black ink, gouache or watercolours (including white – Gemma recommends Dr. P H Martin’s Pen White) plus mixing palettes
- Eraser, ruler, pencils, 2 small water jars, kitchen roll, blu-tac, compasses
