Workshop: David Jones’ Beautiful Letter Panels with Lin Kerr
January 13, 2018 at 10:00 am - January 14, 2018 at 4:00 pm£50 - £60
He draws his letters using a number of historical sources and they have a naive quality as they are hand drawn. There is very little evidence of lines or measuring, but the arrangement makes the pieces into a work of art. His letters are elements of a design with movement and nuance of colour.
We will look in depth at David Jones’ inscriptions comparing the proportions to Trajan Capitals, versals, mediae val manuscripts and modern inscriptions. We will see how he puts his letters and artworks together.
We will be working in what seems to be the way Jones worked, but with a modern twist – creating a background with gesso and acrylic on paper so that it resembles a whitewashed wall with the patination of time etched into it. Letters will be drawn and painted with attention to the letters and the space around them. Mistakes can be overpainted and letters touched up – so it’s actually a relaxing workshop! We’ll start with a couple of letters then move onto a small panel. We’ll also explore a modern interpretation of his work.
Cost: £50 (members), £60 (non-members).
