Workshop: Carolingian with Penny Price

November 11 at 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

The Carolingian hand is a round hand with exaggerated ascenders and descenders and an x height of only 3 nib widths, giving a generous appearance to the script.

We shall look at an historical example, as found in Stan Knight’s book ‘Historical Scripts’ and then make a contemporary version to use to make either a Christmas card or a thank you card or a short piece of text. One suggestion is to collect some Acer palmatum leaves now, or similar delicate leaves, and press them ready to use in the class for printing. I have a limited supply of rollers and inks for your use. (You can use gouache to print with.) We shall start with a no. 2 nib and move to smaller nibs for the card.
